Relationships can play a major role in a teacher’s career. INTASC principle ten talks about the relationships students have with the outside community and the relationships and collaboration that has to occur between the teacher and the various staff members at the school. This principle is the collaboration that could prove to be beneficial to a teacher. The student’s life does not stay at the door when they enter school, which is something that teachers have to consider. If a student is having a rough time at home, the student is not just going to forget all of that the moment they enter the doors to school. The teacher must take that into consideration and bring in the support the student or they as a teacher might need, such as the guidance counselor. I want to create a safe, problem-free learning environment for my students, so that if they are having problems in their life, they know that while in my class they are safe. I also want to promote a positive environment in my classroom.Collaborating with teachers who are on your team or within the same content area as you may prove to be beneficial. By doing this teachers can bounce ideas off of each other in order to plan affective lessons. During my middle school student teaching, I was able to observe and participate during team meetings. It was here that the teachers and on certain days the guidance counselor and assistant principal would meet in order to discuss any team wide projects, happenings in school, and students who we felt were at risk of failing or getting into trouble. During these meetings I learned who may need more help than others, or who may struggle, but not want to ask for help. It was also here where at times if necessary we as the team got a parent involved through a conference to communicate what was going on in school and how their child was doing. These meetings were extremely beneficial to me while at the middle school. I believe that collaborating with the guidance counselors, special educators, and administration, is important as well because they could be helpful in and out of the classroom. INTASC principle ten is important because the teacher needs to understand all aspects of their students’ lives in order to support the students learning and well-being.
Artifact A is a Child Study that I completed during my first semester of my professional year. I observed a seventh grade student during my Middle School rotation at Magnolia Middle School in Harford County Maryland. Included in the artifact are my observation notes, and interview notes from two professionals in the building who have worked with the student. This artifact demonstrates my proficiency in this principle because throughout the process of this project I reflected on how the student was affected not only by his school environment but his home environment as well. During this child study I learned that the student acts as an adult at home a lot of times taking care of his parents. The artifact also demonstrates my proficiency of this principle because I was able to collaborate with other professionals in the building, collect data, and reflect on the data that I found. This study will have a positive impact on student achievement. Knowing the students in your classroom is very important and understanding what they are going home to everyday is important as well, therefore this project helped me truly understand and it helped promote professional collaboration. This study demonstrates that “analyzing” and “reflecting” aspects of the Planning-Teaching-Learning cycle because throughout the study I had to analyze data that was given to me by professionals in the building and I had to reflect on my observations of the student and the data given to me.
Artifact B is the child study attached above. I completed the child study during my middle school rotation on a seventh grade male student. This artifact demonstrates my knowledge in this principle because while completing this child study I had to collaborate with professionals in the building in order to support the student who was the center of the study and the other students who are around him. During this study I interviewed Student X’s sixth grade science teacher and his current vice principal. While interviewing these two I asked for suggestions for having a student like Student X in my classroom. This artifact will have a positive impact on student achievement. The answers and suggestions given to me during the interviews will help me in the future with students like Student X. By observing Student X this semester I was able to see how his actions can affect the other students in the room, therefore I have an idea of how to help the students that may be affected by someone like him in the class. This artifact demonstrates the “analyzing” aspect of the Planning-Teaching-Learning cycle because I took the information I gathered from the professionals in the building and analyzed it to help me better understand Student X and the peers around him. Collaborating with professionals in the building was a key component of this study.
